What Matters Most to Me When Creating Art

Art has always been more than just making something beautiful — for me, it’s about connection, emotion, storytelling, and holding space for something meaningful to emerge.
Over the years, my creative practice has shifted and evolved, but a few things have remained at the heart of what I do.
Whether I’m sketching in the woods, layering colour into a dreamy landscape, or drawing a shopfront or house portrait, these are the things I keep coming back to:
Feeling Over Perfection when Creating Art
I’m much more interested in how a piece feels when I am creating art than whether it’s technically perfect. I want my art to hold emotion — to carry a story, a mood, or a memory. Sometimes that comes through a colour choice, a facial expression, or even the brush marks left on the page. It’s the soul of a piece that makes it resonate.
Nature as a Portal
So much of my inspiration comes from the natural world — pine forests, tangled hedgerows, garden blooms, the changing skies. Nature holds rhythm, mystery, and wildness. It reminds me to slow down and listen, and that energy often weaves its way into my work through animals, trees, moons, or seasonal colour palettes.
Magic & Symbolism
I’m drawn to the mystical, the folkloric, the stories just beneath the surface. Symbols like owls, stars, moons, and wild women recur in my work — not always planned, but always welcome. I believe imagery can carry energy, meaning, and comfort. Sometimes a painting feels like a spell, a quiet offering.
Accessibility & Connection
I want my art to feel welcoming — not exclusive or elitist. That’s why I love creating cards, prints, and downloadable pieces that can live in someone’s home, tucked in a frame or sent in an envelope. Art should be a part of daily life, not locked away. It should speak to people, surprise them, soothe them.
Playfulness & Trust
More and more, I’m learning to trust the process. To allow space for play, mess, experiments, and layers. To follow what lights me up — even if it doesn’t “make sense” at first.
Some of my favourite pieces have come from moments of curiosity, not control.
These are just some of the threads that run through my work, and maybe yours too if you’re a fellow maker or creative soul.
Thanks for being here and for supporting my art — whether it’s with a kind comment, a card purchase, or just quietly following along.
